Boken handlar om
folkmordet och förföljelserna som begicks mot suryoyerna 1914-1915.
Förövarna var turkar (osmaner) och kurder, som ömsom samarbetade, ömsom
stred inbördes. Vi får genom boken följa den kristne pojken Benjamin,
som vid nio års ålder skiljs från sina föräldrar då byn Zaz invaderas av
turkiska soldater och deras kurdiska allierade. Under sin tid som
flykting möter han människor från krigets alla sidor. Öden och
berättelser vävs samman med Benjamins egna reaktioner och iakttagelser i
en kamp på liv och död. Många av händelserna som utförligt beskrivs i
boken har inträffat och bygger på ögonvittnesskildringar och
redogörelser som förts vidare från en generation till en annan.
Författaren har broderat ut dessa händelser efter vad han själv fick
veta om folkmordet och förföljelserna. Benjamin själv däremot, finns
inte i verkligheten, hans historia bygger på flera olika berättelser om
övergreppen |
With death as shadow
The book is about the
genocide and the victimization who happened against the syriac people
1914-1915. The killers, and bad guys was the Turks (osmaner) and Kurds,
which sometimes co-operated, and sometimes fought against each other.
Through the book we follow the christian boy Benjamin which near nine
years old get lost from his both parents when the village Zaz get invade
of Turkish soldiers and their allies, the Kurds.
During his time as a
fugitive he met humans from the both sides of the war. The destiny and
the stories weaves together with Benjamin’s own reactions and
observations in a fight on life or death. Many of the episodes who has
been describe very exactly and detailed in the book have happened and is
building on eyewitnesses and accounts who has been passed on from one
generation to another. The author has embroidered out these episodes
after what he did get to know about the genocide and the victimization.
Benjamin self, however , doesn’t exist, his story is building on many
other stories about the outrages.
